If you are like me, you've been on the fence about the whole Nerf line of swords. Probably not sure of whether they are worth the money, after all your kids probably have a good time with the foam swords you've been getting at the dollar store, even though they only last a few fights.
But maybe you crave something a bit more? Maybe you are thinking "man these swords LOOK cool....but the ones in the stores are always so beaten up.... I don't know..."
We took the plunge a few months ago on the Nerf Nforce swords, the Thunderfury and the Shadowfury. Those swords are just over ten bucks each and they have held up remarkably well. We battle about every other day for a half hour and the swords show a few nicks and scratches but in terms of overall durability, they can't be beaten. My oldest son is almost 5 and we really swing them pretty hard (well, he does at least) and they show no signs of deterioration.
So now the Marauder. Well while the Nforce swords are very light and easy to swing around, the Marauder is not a little kid sword. For most kids this is a two-hand-holding kind of sword and it is very long, almost 3 1/2 feet long. I think ages 6-14 will find this sword is perfect for them and LARPers can rejoice in knowing they can repaint or cover this sword and it will still look very nice.
The design is great, dare I say perfect. The handle is very long, enough so that as a 30 year old adult I can comfortably put both hands on the handle and have a little room to spare. The blade comes out from the hilt thin and then widens into a broadsword type of blade. This part of the sword is about 2 1/2 feet long and it just feels perfect. It's long but not too long.
The marauder is about twice as "thick" with the foam blade as the Thunder and Shadow Fury. This is nice because it's a little more "squishy" than those and also because you are dealing with a "flat" blade here compared to the circular design of the other swords.
Battling someone with the Fury swords with your Marauder is a mismatch because the sheer girth of your sword just overpowers the other swords. You can't really parry the Marauder because the weight of the sword crashing down is too much for the Fury swords. I mean you won't break them, but you will certainly knock them out of their hands a lot.
I didn't know NERF was making another sword and I am VERY happy that they did. I seriously look forward to what they come out with in the future as I am already eagerly awaiting an Nforce Battle Axe, Pole Arm and maybe, just maybe, a Morning Star.
Overall, this is the best toy sword you can buy for the money. Safe, fun, and realistic. Great job Hasbro and Nerf!
