Star Wars Miniatures Starship Battles Starter Set Review

Star Wars Miniatures Starship Battles Starter Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Reviewer's note: I wrote a similar review for the booster set, so please excuse me if you see it twice. However, since I didn't know where most buyers would start, I figured it was best to provide the review under both the boosters and the starters to be safe. That said...
I'm a big fan of Star Wars minis (especially Rebel Storm), and I couldn't wait to get my starter and boosters for the new Star Wars Starship Battles minis game. The game/set includes 60 different ships (30 "light side" and 30 "dark side" -- approximately 1/2 are from the original trilogy, and the other half are from the prequel). I have to admit, the ships look pretty cool (especially the smaller ones like the Millennium Falcon, Salve 1, TIE Fighters, TIE Interceptor, TIE Bomber, B-Wings, X-Wings, Y-Wings, etc.), and as I first read the instructions and looked at the ship stats cards, I was looking very forward to playing. In the end (after playing several games with a friend), however, I was largely disappointed with the game itself. Though there are a few interesting twists (like the command effects),the game is pretty basic, and unfortunately does not allow much room for strategy and/or creativity.
The best advice I can give you is to begin with the starter set, which comes with everything you'll need to play (including two exclusive rare ships -- the big guns in the set, eight randomized common and uncommon ships, map, instructions, command cards, damage counters, D20, etc.). You MIGHT also want to buy a couple of boosters (each booster includes seven randomized ships -- one rare, two uncommon, and four common). This way your buy-in isn't too bad; otherwise, it can get very expensive very quickly. You'll definitely get at least a few good games out of it, and if you like the game more than I did, you can easily buy more boosters (that is much better than the alternative of buying a ton of boosters and not being very happy with the game). Also, if you are interested the minis themselves (i.e., to collect them, for use with the D20 role playing game, or to use with some other Star Wars game/scenario), you'll probably be mostly happy with what Wizards of the Coast came up with.
In sum, the game/rules gets 3 stars, and the minis get 4-5 stars (rounded up to a 4 star rating overall). Hope this helps!

Star Wars CMG Miniatures Game Rebels and Imperials Booster Pack Review

Star Wars CMG Miniatures Game Rebels and Imperials Booster Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you look at my reviews of other Star Wars products (especially Star Wars minis products), you'll see that I usually review them VERY favorably. The game itself is quite fun, and the minis usually look pretty cool. But, I am unable to write a favorable review for this item... Here's why.
There are 24 figures in this set, but every figure in the set is a reissue from a previous set. At first this may seem like a good idea to those who are hoping to get an important figure they missed from a previous set (and I have no trouble with this concept in and of itself). But there is a catch. There are six rare figures and five very rare figures in the set. Further, each case (NOT each booster, but each case of 12 boosters) only contains one very rare figure and two rare figures. So, 9 times out of 12 (or a full 3/4 of the time) you will be paying quite a bit of money for two previously released common or uncommon figures.
If you do the math, that means you would have to buy five cases (or 60 boosters) to stand even a chance of getting all of the figures in the set. And that's assuming you don't get any double very rare figures in the cases you buy.
Very disappointing odds if you ask me!

Star Wars Miniatures Starter Game Set: A Star Wars Miniatures Starter Game Review

Star Wars Miniatures Starter Game Set: A Star Wars Miniatures Starter Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Even though all of the figures and maps in this starter set have been previously released in other sets, I still feel compelled to give it four stars for the following reasons. First, you know exactly what six figures you are getting (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Rebel Captain, Rebel Heavy Trooper, Darth Vader, Elite Stormtrooper, and Heavy Stormtrooper). And, while I would rather have had some new figures to play with, I very much appreciate the fact that you know exactly what you are getting up front. Further, if you happen to need one or more of these figures/maps, it's definitely worth buying this starter. Second, the Obi-Wan Kenobi figure was originally a very rare figure from the Rebel Storm set, and the Darth Vader figure was originally a very rare figure from the Revenge of the Sith set. Thus, until now these figures were harder to get and therefore fairly expensive. But, now you can get them both for one low price. Third, though one side of the map was previously released in the Revenge of the Sith Ultimate Missions book (the "Chancellor's Starship/Thrown Room Map" map), the other one was previously released only as a promo (the "Korriban - Valley of the Dark Lords" map). So while previously available, most people will likely not have one or both of these maps. Finally, the set includes a D20, latest rule book, and force/damage counters, so if this is the very first Star Wars minis item you are purchasing, you will still be able to have a fairly fun game right out of the box.
In sum, if you already have the figures and maps listed above, you will not need to buy this starter set. But, if you don't already have these figures or maps, it's definitely a very good buy for the price. Further, if you are new to the game and just want to give it a try, this is a very inexpensive and reasonable way to do so.

I had my original one sided mat for over 15 years. They last that long. I accidentally used some permanent markers on it and ruined it this last year. I thought they were washable. Caution: these mats are only good for WET-erase markers only. Dry erase will damage them. Use wet erase or some crayola washable markers if you can't find the other. Use only water and tissues as over time the grid will rub off. Otherwise if you take good care of your mat like I did prior to my mishap, you will have it for a long time.

Revenge of the Sith Starter Pk Star Wars Miniatures Review

Revenge of the Sith Starter Pk Star Wars Miniatures
Average Reviews:

You will definitely want to buy this starter game if you want to get into playing Star Wars minatures. It comes with "quick start" rules, which you can start playing after reading them. The advanced rule book is also included but I am still trying to master the quick start version, so I can't tell you anything about that. It comes with Obi-wan and General Grevious, which are only found in this starter set. We have played it several times now and are finally getting the hang of it, but you will want to get booster packs so that you can start building a better battle team because it is starting to get boring with only the figures that are included. You don't have to just get the Revenge of the Sith figures either...we got booster packs fromt he Rebellion era (Luke, Han, etc.) and added them with the light and dark side figures that are included in this starter set.
If you like 2 player games of strategy, you will like this game. But think about getting booster packs to go along with it also, otherwise, you will find that it gets boring with just the figures included in the box. However, to get the basics down, just start with this starter set first, and then start thinking about building on.

The Clone Wars: A Star Wars Miniatures Booster Expansion (Star Wars Miniatures Product) Review

The Clone Wars: A Star Wars Miniatures Booster Expansion (Star Wars Miniatures Product)

Got this and several similar packs to play with some friends who were getting back into the habit of playing role-playing games. The miniatures themselves are little over an inch tall and made of plastic. The only problem I have is that you never quite know what you will find in the box and some of parts of the pieces are thin and delicate, so they will break if you're not careful, but easy to repair if such a thing happens. Overall the pieces are nice to have for a more visual type of RPG gaming.

Alliance and Empire Booster Pack: A Star Wars Miniatures product Review

Alliance and Empire Booster Pack: A Star Wars Miniatures product
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Alliance and Empire" is the seventh expansion set for the Star Wars Miniatures game, which started with the Rebel Storm Starter set back in September, 2004 (see more about the minis game itself in my addendum below). This set was released to coincide with the 30th anniversary of Star Wars. As such, these figures have a special square bases with "Star Wars" written on the front. HOWEVER, THIS SET IS STILL FULLY COMPATIBLE WITH THE OTHER STAR WARS MINIS SETS. There are 60 different figures in this set. Each booster comes with seven durable, pre-painted minis (including one rare OR one very rare figure).
The first thing I look for in any expansion set are how many characters I recognize from the movies (vs. those that appeared only in the books). I am particularly interested in figures from the original trilogy, and I am happy to say that there are at least 40 figures from the original trilogy in this set. Most are interesting and/or more powerful variations of earlier figures (for example, Boba Fett, Lando Calrissian, Jabba, Wampa, R2-D2 with C-3PO, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Imperial Governor Tarkin, three different versions of Han Solo, and three different versions of Luke Skywalker). But, some of the figures have never been released before (for example, Wicket the Ewok, Ewok Hang Glider, and Jawa on Ronto). Notably, there are even a few great new common and uncommon figures from the original trilogy in this set (for example, Death Star Trooper, Death Star Gunner, Rebel Commando Strike Leader, Talz Spy, and a variation of the Ewok with a bow -- rather than just melee attack).
The rest of the figures are either from the prequel, the books, or generic/minor characters (however, some of these characters are also very good -- especially for use in the Star Wars RPG).
In sum, this expansion set is excellent for those interested in the original trilogy, and fair for those interested in the prequel.
ADDENDUM: (Please note that I include this addendum at the end of all my Star Wars minis reviews, so if you've read it before, there is no need to read it again.) If you want to play the Star Wars minis game as it was designed to be played, it is best to have at least one starter (each starter comes with game instructions, a map, a D20, terrain tiles that are very helpful and add great variety to the game, and more). I like the Rebel Storm Starter the best because it's from the classic era/trilogy, but the Clone Strike and Revenge of the Sith starters from the newer movies will also work. If you don't want to invest in a starter, you can also get one of the three "Ultimate Missions" books, as each comes with a double sided map and a few smaller terrain tiles (again, I like the Rebel Strom Ultimate Missions book the best because it is also from the classic era/trilogy). Or, you can buy the "Attack on Endor" scenario pack, which comes with TWO double sided maps (in addition to a scaled AT-ST that is fully usable in play). The main point here is that you'll need some type of map/grid. If you don't want to buy a Star Wars one, generic ones are also available at most gaming stores (you can use your imagination to set the scene, or draw terrain with an erasable marker right on the grid). Of course, the minis are also useful for the roleplaying game (RPG) - in which case you may not need a starter or map, but will likely need the "Core Rulebook" instead. Finally, they are just fun to collect for those who like all things Star Wars!
