(More customer reviews)This is a review for the "Ecliptic Evader" Pirate version of the TIE Fighter.
The idea is that this TIE was stolen by Hobbie Klivian while defecting the Empire's Academy together with Biggs Darklighter, thus disgracing their commanding officer, Soontir Fel.
They were stationed on the "Rand Ecliptic", but once they defected, the rebels painted their insignia on the wings. Hence the name of this version of the TIE: Ecliptic Evader / Pirate TIE.
While the concept is nice for hard core fans, this is a somewhat obscure side-story and the TIE has no actual screen-time, wether in the movies or TV series. This would explain why this exclusive toy actually (june 2010) commands lower prices than the regular ties.
So on to the toy itself:
PROs:
- Big TIE! Until a couple of years ago, we only got the small wing TIE. The wings on this one are more than twice the size of the smaller one star wars OTC Tie fighter vehicle.
- Rebel TIE! This is an interesting story... for the ones who know this
- Rebel pilot (in TIE uniform) included. This is based on the very poseable version used for Biggs Darklighter from the Evolutions set Star Wars 3.75 Inch Scale Clone Wars Evolutions - Imperial Pilots Legacy 3 Pack.
- Great price (as of june 2010 or before, you regularly found it at discounted prices).
CONs:
- Rebel insignia on TIE was never seen on screen and MOST people would possibly not buy this one to add to the regular Imperial space force. This is not a good election for your first TIE.
- BAD paint election. The cockpit hatch that opens to insert the pilot is made of a flexible translucent plastic. The paint is not of the flexible type, so it chips and comes off in chunks, leaving the transparent plastic visible. Very bad.
- GREY TIE. Yes, I know they are grey in the movie, but all of the other TIE toys have been done in BLUE (the original TIE color until they noticed that they became transparent because of the BLUEscreen!).
- Hobbie's head is... just plain awful. Small piece that may be swallowed by smaller children. Also the gun.
- Simpler cockpit, if compared to the newest big TIE Star Wars: The Clone Wars Imperial TIE Fighter.

A PREVIEWS Exclusive! These TIE Fighters were used by Biggs Darklighter and his mutineers to escape the Rand Ecliptic. Low on fuel, the group returned to the Ecliptic only to find it had been taken over by a Rebel cell led by Hobbie Klivian. The TIEs were then refitted with hyperdrives, astromech sockets, and ejection seats for a mission to steal X-Wings from Incom. Finally, in a bold statement of defiance, these formerly Imperial fighters were emblazoned with the Rebel Alliance symbol! Bigg's pilots then ejected from the TIE Fighters - with the astromech droids piloting the ships on their own - a tactic that drew off Imperial TIE fighters on patrol around the system, allowing Darklighter and his team the proper distraction to gain entry to the Incom facility! Includes an exclusive Hobbie Klivian figure and Fighter Deco!
